Research interests

The research is focused on nucleation and crystallization studies, at the interface of physical chemistry and materials science, where events preceding the synthesis of final materials become important, and key advances can be made towards designed materials. The current project addresses existing gaps in understanding of homogeneous nucleation mechanisms of Al(III) (oxyhydr)oxide — especially the pre-nucleation equilibrium stage at low driving force for phase separation. The Al (III) chemistry is important in many scientific but also practical contexts including energetic, environmental, agricultural, medical, and pharmaceutical applications. These findings allow further studying of the influence of Ca2+ ions on chemical equilibration and nucleation mechanism. This is of high importance for the fundamental understanding of the aqueous Al-Ca chemistry, which is relevant for early-stage inorganic aspects of neuro- and osteo-degenerative diseases. Besides, the influence of organic additives on pre-nucleation cluster formation and the entire nucleation mechanism in Al(III) and Fe(III) systems will be studied.
